Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who won the election Monday<\/a> to officially replace former leader Justin Trudeau, warned that President Trump is “trying to break us.”<\/p>\n

In remarks following his victory securing a full term, Carney argued Trump has “fundamentally changed” the world in recent months \u2014 pointing to sweeping tariffs<\/a> and his proposal for Canada to merge<\/a> with the U.S.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs I\u2019ve been warning for months, America wants our land, our resources, our water, our country,\u201d Carney said in his victory speech late Monday in Ottawa. \u201cThese are not idle threats. President Trump is trying to break us so America can own us. That will never \u2026 ever happen.”<\/p>\n

“But we also must recognize the reality that our world has fundamentally changed,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

While Carney won the Liberal Party another term in office, it is still early to tell if his party will hold the majority \u2014 172 seats \u2014 in Parliament.<\/p>\n

Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre conceded his defeat in a speech. While his party failed to capture the majority, he said they would ensure the Liberal Party is held accountable. <\/p>\n

Poilievre, who months ago appeared to have an opportunity to win the late April election with Canadians\u2019 displeasure with immigration and inflation, is now projected to also lose his seat in the legislature<\/a>, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation projects.<\/p>\n

Carney, a former central banker, became the party\u2019s leader in March after Trudeau resigned ahead of Trump’s return<\/a> to the Oval Office. He has since been responding to the president’s digs<\/a> against Canada \u2014 including the imposition of a 25 percent tax on imports not covered by the U.S.-Mexico-Canada agreement<\/a> \u2014 vowing that Ottawa will not back down and the country will carve its own path in the new political climate. <\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s put an end to the division and anger of the past,” Carney said during his speech Monday. “We are all Canadian, and my government will work for and with everyone.”<\/p>\n

“No matter where you live, no matter what language you speak, no matter how you voted, I will always do my best to represent everyone who calls Canada home,” he added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
