The move generated controversy and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/us-news\/immigration\/border-coverage\/appeals-court-rules-against-texas-border-buoy-string\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/us-news\/immigration\/border-coverage\/appeals-court-rules-against-texas-border-buoy-string\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a lawsuit<\/a> from the Biden administration.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<aside class=\"promo-link\">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/us-news\/immigration\/trump-dramatically-reshaped-immigration-in-first-100-days-report-says\/\" class=\"promo-link__link\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\tTrump \u2018dramatically reshaped\u2019 immigration in first 100 days, report says\t<\/a><br \/>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>Now NewsNation has learned that the same buoys may be deployed at the northern border, specifically in a Montana lake that stretches into Canada.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Border buoys already used across Rio Grande<\/h2>\n<p>The Trump administration is weighing this latest move, which could see floating buoy barriers stretching across lakes that border our neighbors to the north.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Texas Gov. (AP Photo\/Eric Gay, File)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong><em>Editor&#8217;s Note: The image above shows buoys being used as a barrier to curb illegal border crossings in the Rio Grande river in Texas.&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In an earlier <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/us-news\/immigration\/border-coverage\/gov-abbott-planning-to-expand-buoy-border-barriers-in-rio-grande\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">exclusive interview with NewsNation<\/a>, Abbott said buoys are one of the most effective ways to discourage migrants from trying to cross from Mexico into Texas. He added the cost is \u201cone-tenth\u201d that of a border wall.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/us-news\/immigration\/border-coverage\/gov-abbott-planning-to-expand-buoy-border-barriers-in-rio-grande\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spent $850,000<\/a> on an initial 1,000-foot-long barrier of buoys to be anchored in concrete along the Rio Grande, in the waters between Eagle Pass, Texas, and Piedras Negras, Mexico.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Buoys along the northern border<\/h2>\n<p>The acting Spokane sector chief told NewsNation that they are in the planning phases of putting bright orange buoys into Lake Koocanusa, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/cuomo-show\/us-canada-border-fentanyl-immigration\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/cuomo-show\/us-canada-border-fentanyl-immigration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spreads into Canada<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.logicalware.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/image_b4d053.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3351035\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Buoys would be deployed along the northern border. (NewsNation)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Jason Liebe, with the Spokane sector, told NewsNation the barriers will help agents monitor waterways into the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they make landfall, they legally enter the United States if they get off that boat,\u201d he said. \u201cSo that stuff we have to monitor. We believe that the buoy barriers would be very helpful for that to keep that traffic out the legitimate traffic in.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<aside class=\"promo-link\">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/us-news\/immigration\/border-coverage\/how-cbp-is-securing-northern-border-exclusive\/\" class=\"promo-link__link\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\tHow CBP is securing the US northern border: Exclusive\t<\/a><br \/>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>One concern about the buoys is at mom-and-pop shops on the U.S. side who would be impacted by seeing fewer people coming across to shop and frequent those businesses.<\/p>\n<p>But one of the solutions there might be the CBP road map. It\u2019s an app that allows you to put in your vessel and passenger information, and then could allow you to navigate around those buoys.<\/p>\n<p>That could also take out some of the guesswork for the agents who are in the water trying to figure out if people are just tourists or if they have nefarious intent.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">US border security with Canada <\/h2>\n<p>Crossings from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/politics\/canada-updates-guidance-traveling-united-states\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/politics\/canada-updates-guidance-traveling-united-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canada into the U.S.<\/a> have dropped significantly during President Donald Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/top-headlines\/ap-top-headlines\/ap-from-alaska-to-maine-communities-that-border-canada-worry-us-tariffs-come-at-a-personal-cost\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/top-headlines\/ap-top-headlines\/ap-from-alaska-to-maine-communities-that-border-canada-worry-us-tariffs-come-at-a-personal-cost\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">trade war<\/a>, including both legal and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/us-news\/immigration\/border-coverage\/migrants-cross-canadian-border-subzero-temps\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/us-news\/immigration\/border-coverage\/migrants-cross-canadian-border-subzero-temps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">illegal crossings<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The increased barriers could also tie into Canadian policy following the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/world\/ap-canadians-are-set-to-vote-in-an-election-dominated-by-trumps-trade-war-and-bluster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">election of the Liberal party and its leader, Mark Carney.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Carney is saying that the days of depending on the U.S. are over and he\u2019s ready to spend big to make Canada more self-reliant.<\/p>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<aside class=\"promo-link\">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/business\/your-money\/amazon-display-trump-tariff-costs-bezos\/\" class=\"promo-link__link\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\tAmazon denies reports it will list tariffs in price listings\t<\/a><br \/>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>That includes a major shift at the border. Canada may pull back from years of close coordination with the U.S. on immigration and security.
