{"id":1532,"date":"2025-08-04T19:44:31","date_gmt":"2025-08-04T19:44:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.logicalware.net\/?p=1532"},"modified":"2025-08-05T19:25:32","modified_gmt":"2025-08-05T19:25:32","slug":"noem-alligator-alcatraz-to-serve-as-model-for-detention-centers-nationwide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.logicalware.net\/index.php\/2025\/08\/04\/noem-alligator-alcatraz-to-serve-as-model-for-detention-centers-nationwide\/","title":{"rendered":"Noem: &#039;Alligator Alcatraz&#039; to serve as model for detention centers nationwide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem called Florida\u2019s &#8220;Alligator Alcatraz&#8221; a model for state-run immigrant detention facilities, saying the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is hoping to create other similar sites.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The locations we&#8217;re looking at are right by airport runways that will help give us an efficiency that we&#8217;ve never had before,&#8221; Noem told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/alligator-alcatraz-model-kristi-noem-homeland-security\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CBS News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Alligator Alcatraz, built near the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport in a 30 square mile area otherwise surrounded by the Everglades, has come under fire for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/alligator-alcatraz-immigration-detainees-florida-cc2fb9e34e760a50e97f13fe59cbf075\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">poor conditions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Built in just a matter of days, the facility uses soft-side tents with chain-link fences to create cells that separate units of bunks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Detainees have complained of maggot-filled food, flooding floors, insects everywhere, and poorly functioning air conditioning<\/p>\n<p>GOP voices have boasted of the difficulty of the terrain, with scorching temperatures and swampland that is home to alligators and snakes.<\/p>\n<p>Noem told CBS that similar sites are under consideration in Arizona, Nebraska and Louisiana.<\/p>\n<p>While the DHS is flush with funds from the &#8220;big, beautiful bill&#8221; to build new detention centers that can double detention capacity to as high as 100,000, Noem framed the matter as a cost-saving effort.<\/p>\n<p>The facilities are cheaper than those available through private contractors and the hope is to have migrants in the facilities \u2014 and quickly deported \u2014 within days, &#8220;facilitating quick turnarounds.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They&#8217;re all strategically designed to make sure that people are in beds for less days,&#8221; Noem said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It can be much more efficient once they get their hearings, due process, paperwork.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The contracts are currently just for one year but are able to be extended for up to five.<\/p>\n<p>But the secretary questioned the longer-term deals that have been signed with private contractors in the past.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For me personally, the question that I&#8217;ve asked of every one of these contracts is, why are we signing 15-year deals?&#8221; Noem said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have to look at our mission.
